Explore the real-life locations of the Shire, Mordor, and more on an unforgettable Lord of the Rings adventure through New Zealand.

If you’ve ever dreamed of stepping into the Shire, crossing the windswept plains of Rohan, or gazing into the fires of Mount Doom—New Zealand is calling your name. As the real-life Middle-earth, this stunning country was the backdrop for Peter Jackson's epic Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies. With breathtaking landscapes, rich Maori mythology, and film locations that feel ripped from a fantasy novel, New Zealand is the ultimate destination for any Tolkien fan.
As a certified travel advisor and fantasy travel specialist, I help adventurers like you step into the pages of their favorite stories. Here's everything you need to know to plan your own epic journey through Middle-earth. We're going on an adventure!

Why New Zealand is Middle-earth
Peter Jackson, a New Zealander himself, chose his homeland for its dramatic, unspoiled beauty—towering mountains, lush forests, winding rivers, and mysterious valleys. The country's unique and varied terrain made it the perfect stand-in for Tolkien's diverse and magical world. Since the films' release, fans from around the globe have flocked to see it for themselves. The magic of the movies was one of the main reasons that I wanted to go to New Zealand, and for many years it sat at the top of my bucket list.

Must-Visit Lord of the Rings Locations
🏠 Hobbiton (Matamata)
The lush pastures of Matamata in the North Island are home to the iconic Hobbiton Movie Set. This fully preserved set is one of the most magical experiences in New Zealand. Explore 44 Hobbit holes, enjoy a drink at The Green Dragon Inn, and imagine life in the Shire. For the ultimate experience add on Lunch, Second Breakfast, or for the true fans, a Dinner which includes a night tour of Hobbiton.
⛰ Tongariro National Park (Mount Doom)
Mount Ngauruhoe served as the ominous Mount Doom. The
Tongariro Alpine Crossing
is one of New Zealand’s best hikes—challenging but worth it for sweeping volcanic landscapes that look like they belong in Mordor. The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is ranked annually as one of the 10 best day hikes in the world. I've even helped book a marriage proposal on this hike for one of my amazing clients.
🌳 Fiordland National Park (Fangorn Forest & River Anduin)
With misty fjords, ancient forests, and mirror-like lakes, Fiordland captures the mood of Middle-earth perfectly. Scenes filmed here include parts of Fangorn Forest and the River Anduin. Fiordland is it's own special world, with your choice between Milford Sound, which Rudyard Kipling described as the 8th wonder of the world; or Doubtful Sound which in my opinion is one of the most magical places on earth.
🌋 Wellington (Weta Workshop & Mount Victoria)
Wellington is the beating heart of LOTR production. Tour
Weta Workshop
to see props and costumes. You can't touch many of them, but you can see almost every weapon and suit of armor from the movies. They even have the academy award for best special effects there. Also, you can hike up Mount Victoria to find the spot where the Hobbits hid from the Black Riders.
⛱ Twizel (Pelennor Fields)
The sweeping Mackenzie Basin doubled as Pelennor Fields, where the epic Battle of Minas Tirith was filmed. Many guided tours visit this site, often with dramatic storytelling included. This is a less visited LOTR filming site, but if you have the time and ability, very worthwhile to visit.
Tips for Fantasy Travelers
Best Time to Visit:
November to April offers the best weather and visibility. But you can go year round and still enjoy yourself. Many of the sites are close to sea level, so in the winter, there is less chance of snow on the ground, but you get great view of the snow covered mountains. Winter in New Zealand also means less crowds, more availability, and lower costs.
Packing Suggestions:
Layers for changing climates, a good pair of hiking boots, and if you're a superfan—your elf cloak or One Ring replica for photo ops. Make sure to leave plenty of space in your suitcase for souvenirs though, with all the places available to buy gifts, you'll want to make sure you have enough room for those uniquely New Zealand or Lord of the Rings items.
Guided vs. Self-Drive Tours:
Guided tours offer deep insights and exclusive access, while self-drive lets you explore on your own timeline. I can help you choose or customize the best option for your style. Each one has it's pro's and con's, but a conversation with me will help you narrow down the right choice for you. Bonus Fantasy Experiences
Waitomo Glowworm Caves:
A magical underground world lit by thousands of bioluminescent glowworms. It feels like stepping into Lothlórien. It's located relatively close to Hobbiton, and many times is included in packages. So you can do both as part of your trip. There are several options in the area, so make sure you select the right one for your interest.
Maori Cultural Experiences:
The rich mythology and storytelling traditions of the Maori people resonate deeply with fans of fantasy and lore. Not far from Hobbiton likes the Maori cultural center, where you can enjoy an evening of dancing, dining on traditional dishes, and a tour of the history of this tribe. This is definitely a must see if you are interested in unique cultural experiences.
Wine & Food:
From Middle-earth-style feasts to boutique vineyards, New Zealand is also a paradise for foodies. Seafood lovers, you are never far from fresh, local, seafood. And if you like wine, well, some of the best wine in the world comes from multiple regions in New Zealand to include both the North Island and the South Island.
