TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and CLEAR, which one is right for me?

Here's a quick guide to help you decide what's the right one for you!

When it comes to easing the stress of air travel, programs like TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and CLEAR offer frequent travelers ways to expedite their journey through the airport. However, these services cater to different needs and come with distinct benefits. Understanding the differences between them can help you choose the one that best suits your travel style. I've had all three, and here's what I can tell you about each:

TSA PreCheck: Speedy Security Screening

TSA PreCheck is a program designed to expedite the security screening process at U.S. airports. Once approved, you can access dedicated PreCheck lanes, which typically move faster than regular lines. One of the benefits is that TSA PreCheck members are not required to remove their shoes, belts, or light jackets, nor do they need to take out laptops or liquids from their carry-on bags, I mean that in itself is worth it.

Who Should Consider TSA PreCheck?

  • Frequent domestic travelers: If you fly primarily within the U.S., TSA PreCheck can significantly reduce your time spent in security lines.
  • Families: Children 12 and under can join you in the TSA PreCheck line, making it a great option for family travel.

How to Apply?

  • The application process involves an online application, a background check, and an in-person interview. The fee is $78 for a five-year membership.

Global Entry: Expedited Entry Back into the U.S.

Global Entry is a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) program that offers expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the United States. Global Entry members can use automated kiosks at select airports, bypassing the traditional customs lines. Importantly, Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck as a benefit, so you get the best of both worlds.

Who Should Consider Global Entry?

  • International travelers: If you frequently travel outside the U.S., Global Entry can save you a significant amount of time when returning to the country.
  • Dual benefits seekers: Since Global Entry includes TSA PreCheck, it’s ideal for travelers who want the benefits of both programs.

How to Apply?

  • The application process is more involved than TSA PreCheck, requiring an extensive background check and an in-person interview with a CBP officer. The fee is $100 for a five-year membership.

CLEAR: Identity Verification for Faster Access

CLEAR is a privately operated service that uses biometric data (fingerprints and iris scans) to verify your identity, allowing you to bypass the traditional ID check at the airport security line. Once verified, CLEAR members are escorted to the front of the security screening line, making the process even faster. It’s important to note that CLEAR does not replace TSA PreCheck; it complements it.

Who Should Consider CLEAR?

  • Ultra-frequent travelers: If you’re at the airport several times a month, CLEAR can further reduce the time you spend in lines.
  • Event-goers: CLEAR is expanding beyond airports, with access at various stadiums and venues, making it useful for more than just air travel.

How to Apply?

  • The enrollment process is quick and can often be completed at the airport. The fee is $189 per year, though various credit cards and airline loyalty programs may offer discounts.

Which One Is Right for You?

  • TSA PreCheck is ideal for frequent domestic travelers who want to speed through security without the hassle of removing shoes, belts, or electronics.
  • Global Entry is perfect for international travelers who want the benefits of TSA PreCheck along with expedited customs processing upon re-entry to the U.S.
  • CLEAR is the choice for those who value time savings and are frequent travelers, as it allows you to bypass the ID check and head straight to the security screening.

The best program depends on your travel habits. For domestic travelers, TSA PreCheck is often sufficient, while Global Entry offers comprehensive benefits for international travel. CLEAR provides an additional layer of convenience, especially for those who find themselves in airports frequently. Each program has its own costs and benefits, so consider your travel needs and budget when deciding which one—or combination—is right for you.
